That jagged cliff

Rocky and steep;

The one I stood on the edge of

For years.

Standing with half my foot on

Half my foot off

The edge.

I didn’t care if anyone would come

Try to talk me away

I liked standing there

It gave me power

Over my life.

That cliff was my refuge

My ‘safe place’

Sometimes I was there for hours

Sometimes for days,

Wondering to myself

If I wanted to live in this moment

Or die in it?

Today I went to that cliff

Didn’t even have the nerve

To stand at the edge

It frightened me

And it made me wonder

How in the world

I could have ever

Felt safe here?
